Welcome to the Jackson County Democratic Party

Headquarters, 500 Mill Street, Sylva NC      Mailing address:  PO Box 114 Sylva NC 28779

Telephone:  828-226-8500

We are a group of citizens who want to make our mountain county, our state. and our whole country better. And we are looking for others who want to join us in achieving this aim.

There are 9,794 registered Democrats in Jackson County. The greatest concentration of Democrats is in the Cullowhee, Webster, Sylva-South “corridor.” The county is divided into 14 precincts varying in size from the smallest, Canada, with 173 Democrats to the largest, Cullowhee, with 1,697 Democrats. There is a designated polling place in each precinct.

The Party  generally holds monthly meetings at the Headquarters on Mill Street in Sylva on the third Tuesday at 6:30 p.m until 8:00. This is a time for sharing information from the standing committees and the Precincts and for planning for new activities.

We also hold special events such as campaign rallies, picnics, the Christmas Gala, fundraisers, hot dog suppers, all of which provide opportunities to get together with other like-minded people.

The most important thing we do is vote and to encourage others to vote. GOTV (Get Out The Vote) in election years includes reaching out to family, neighbors, and others and making sure that all of us get to the polls. Many of us like to help by keeping the Headquarters open as an information center,  by making calls or canvassing or by writing letters to the editor. An important part of GOTV is voter registration drive when volunteers go to public places to help people get registered correctly .

Jackson County Democratic Officers  are elected every two years at the County Convention in the spring. The officers include the Chair (Currently Frank Burrell), First, Second, and Third Vice-Chairs, a Secretary and a Treasurer.

Each Precinct has a Chair and Vice Chair and some also have a secretary. You can use the Contacts tab above to see a complete list of precinct officers and their contact information.

There are several Auxiliary and Interest Groups: Mens Club, Democratic Women of Jackson County, Young Dems (ages 18 to 35), and College Dems at Western Carolina University. The Issues Round Table plans advertising and messaging.

Special committees work on Fundraising, Internet Technology and Social Media, Communications, Young Democrats, Logistics/Facilities and Vote Builder.

Share your time, your expertise  and your ideas by joining an auxiliary group or making a financial contribution to the party. Come to a monthly meeting , attend special events or volunteer to Get Out The Vote.
