Whether you are voting for the first time, recently moved, updating your registration or planning for Election Day, we want to help make the process simple and easy to understand.

Ways To Vote

Vote Early In Person

Early voting gives you more flexibility and allows you to vote at any participating early voting site in your county. Same day registration and updates may also be available during early voting.

Vote By Mail

Any eligible North Carolina voter can request an absentee ballot without needing a special reason. Voters can request, submit and track ballots through the state election system. Request your absentee ballot early and make sure all instructions are completed before returning it.

Vote On Election Day

Polls generally open: 6:30 AM to 7:30 PM

If you are in line by closing time, you are still allowed to vote.

Election Day voters must vote at their assigned polling location.

How do I know if I am registered to vote?

Can I vote if I recently moved?

f you recently moved, you may need to update your voter registration information. Eligible voters may also be able to update information during the early voting period through same day registration.

Can I register and vote on the same day?

Yes. North Carolina allows eligible voters to use same day registration during early voting with proof of residence documentation.

Where do I find my sample ballot?

You can view your sample ballot through the North Carolina voter lookup system before an election here. Sample ballots are personalized based on your address and voting district.

Can I vote by mail?

Yes. Any registered North Carolina voter may request an absentee
ballot here and vote by mail. No special reason is required.

Do I need a photo ID to vote?

North Carolina voters are generally asked to present an approved photo ID when voting. Acceptable IDs include a North Carolina driver’s license, U.S. passport, military ID and certain approved student or government IDs.

If I requested a mail ballot, can I still vote in person?

Yes. If you requested a ballot but have not returned it, you can still vote in person. Your absentee ballot will be canceled after you vote in person.

Can I bring someone with me to help me vote?

Yes. Voters who need assistance due to age, disability or difficulty reading or writing may receive help according to election rules.

What if I need help at the polls?

Poll workers are available at voting locations to assist voters with questions and voting procedures. You can also contact the Jackson County Board of Elections if you need assistance.

Can college students vote in North Carolina?

College students may register and vote where they consider their residence to be, but a voter may only have one voting residence. 

What if I make a mistake on my ballot?

If you make a mistake while voting in person, ask a poll worker for assistance. If you make a mistake on a mail ballot, contact your county Board of Elections for guidance before submitting it. Election officials are available to help ensure your vote is properly counted.
