National Voter Registration day is September 15, 2026. This is a good reminder for us all to check our own voter registration status which is easily done here. There are a variety of reasons you might not be registered. Anyone with a North Carolina Driver’s license can easily register to vote online at this site. If you don’t have a North Carolina Driver’s License, you can go to that same page and print off a form you can mail in. Remember, you are going to need an approved form of photo identification in order register and to vote.

Voter registration drives aren’t really conducted like they used to be. Here in North Carolina, many voters choose to register as ‘unaffiliated.’ While I understand the impulse, I think it is a mistake. If you want to build political power and affect issues in your community, it will be difficult to do that as an unaffiliated voter.

Registering to vote as a Democrat means you want to belong to a party that promotes equality. It means you want to be a member of the party of the people, not the powerful. Here in Jackson County, we have seen Republican control of our County Commission lead to the damage to our library and community rooms. At the state level, the North Carolina General Assembly had given Duke Energy a free pass to screw over consumers and Republicans on the North Carolina Supreme Court upheld that.

Please take the time to check on your own voter registration. Then, start talking with the other people in your life to make sure that they are also ready to vote. This November, Please Remember, the people have the power and it is time to use yours by voting.
